Here’s a list of points put across by the Government of India in this new Green Hydrogen Policy –

  1. Green hydrogen/green ammonia will be defined as hydrogen/ammonia produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy, including renewable energy that has been banked and hydrogen/ammonia produced from biomass.
  2. The producer of green hydrogen and green ammonia will be exempted from projects taken up before June 30, 2025, of inter-state transmission charges for a period of 25 years.
  3. Green hydrogen/green ammonia can be manufactured by a developer using renewable energy from a co-located renewable energy plant, or obtained from a renewable energy plant located far away, whether it was installed by the same developer, or by a third party or purchase of renewable energy. from the power exchange. Green hydrogen/green ammonia plants will be provided open access to sourcing of renewable energy within 15 days of receipt of complete application by all means.   4. Also, banking will be allowed for a period of 30 days for renewable energy used to make green hydrogen/green ammonia.
  5. The fee for banking shall be determined by the State Commission which shall not exceed the cost difference between the average tariff and average market clearing price (MCP) of renewable energy purchased by the distribution licensee during the previous year.   9. Manufacturers of Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia will be allowed to set up bunkers near ports for storage of Green Ammonia for export/use by shipping. The land for the purpose of storage will be made available at the fee applicable by the port authorities concerned.
  10. Renewable energy consumed for production of green hydrogen/green ammonia will be counted in the RPO compliance of the consumer entity. Renewable energy consumed beyond the obligation of the producer will be counted for PO compliance of discom in whose area the project is located.

What is green hydrogen?

How It Is Produced ?

  • At present, two technologies are being used in India to produce hydrogen fuel. In the first technique hydrogen gas is produced from the electrolysis of water. In this, hydrogen is separated from water.
  • In the second technology, hydrogen and carbon are separated from natural gas by breaking them down. It takes up hydrogen and the remaining carbon is used in the auto, electronic and aerospace sectors. The hydrogen mission was first announced in the country in the February 2021 budget. Indian Oil and many big companies have announced to make big investments in this mission.
