What is Mesh Topology?

A mesh topology is a network topology in which all the network nodes are individually connected to most of the other nodes. There is not a concept of a central switch, hub or computer which acts as a central point of communication to pass on the messages.

Unlike other network topologies, it can be divided into two kinds:

  • Fully connected
  • Partially connected

A fully connected topology has all the nodes connected to every other node. If you know the graph theory, then it is like a fully connected graph where all the nodes are connected to every other node. On the other hand, a partially connected topology does not have all the nodes connected to each other.

How Do Mesh Networks Work?

  • Routing or flooding technology is used to send messages in a mesh network. In Routing, a message has to go from node to node to reach its destination.
    There should be constant connections in the mesh network.
  • If the path is broken in the meantime, then reconfigure yourself using healing algorithms.
  • The flooding technique relies on distributing data in a network from one node to another.
  • The data is sent by a subset of nodes because it is impossible for all nodes to be available at the same time. Each node has a subset of data.

Advantages of mesh topology:

  • It can manage high amount traffic because it can have multiple devices transmitting data simultaneously.
  • This topology provides many pathways for success in destination and tons redundancy
  • If a device fails, there is no break or data transmission in the network.
  • Data transmission between other devices is not interrupted when the device is added.
  • It is a straightforward task to identify the fault.
  • There is no traffic problem because there is a point-to-point link to a dedicated point for each computer.
  • If any kind of attack is carried out, the single node can be easily changed.
  • Nodes can communicate directly with each other. It does not require a central access point.
  • Mesh networks can transmit signals over greater distances.

Disadvantages of mesh topology:

  • The cost of implementing is high.
  • Installation in mesh is difficult.
  • The need for power is more because all the nodes have to be active and share load at all times.
  • The possibility of unnecessary connections is high, which requires more capacity for high cost and low efficiency.
  • Maintenance with mesh are very challenging.

Types of Mesh Topology

There are 2 types of mesh-topology that you are told below.

  1. Full Mesh Topology – In full all the nodes are connected to each other. This formula is used to calculate the number of connections in the full mesh-topology. (N is the number of computers in the network): N(N-1)/2 it is very expensive to implement it. It is mostly used for network backbones.
  2. Partial Mesh Topology – In partial topology, many other computers of the network are connected to the 2 computers of the network. It is less expensive and also helps to reduce redundancy. Partial topology is more practical. If one of the primary computers or connections in the network fails, the rest of the networks continue their work.
