Chief of Defence Staff :
Chief of Defence Staff is a newly created post under the Indian armed forces.
It aims to enhance the quality of military advice to the political leadership.
It was established in December 2019.
General Bipin Rawat was the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who took office on 1 January 2020.
On 15 December 2021, General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in the Nilgiris.
CDS General Bipin Rawat has been posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour.
Upper age limit for the CDSÂ has been fixed at 65 years.
