The Jnanpith Award (also known as the Jnanpith Award in Hindi) is considered to be the highest honour for literature in India. It was established in 1961 by the Bharatiya Jnanpith. This honour is given only to Indian citizens for their “outstanding contribution to literature in the Constitution of India and in any Indian language included in the Eighth Schedule of English.”

The first recipient of the Jnanpith Award was G. Shankar Kurup, who won it in 1965 for his compilation in Malayalam language, Odakkuzhal.
